Careers at Capitol Benefits
Property & Casualty Producer
Independently owned since 2007. Named a 2026 Inc. Best Workplace, with multiple Best Places to Work awards, 575+ Google reviews and a 4.9 star rating. No private equity playbook, no shuffling accounts, no call center. Just a team that shows up.
Why this role is different
Most producer jobs hand you a phone list and a quota. This one hands you an agency people actually want to buy from.
Capitol Benefits is a 25 person independent advisory serving the DC metro market across personal lines, commercial lines and employee benefits. We have account managers who answer their own phones and know clients by name, not policy number. Our clients stay, and so does our team, several of them approaching a decade.
You will sell into that. Not around it.
What you will do
- Build and run your own prospecting plan across networking, referrals, centers of influence and community relationships
- Lead discovery and risk conversations, build the right coverage recommendation, present it and close it
- Write mostly commercial lines, with personal lines and account rounding alongside it
- Keep a clean, organized pipeline and follow up like the business depends on it, because it does
- Hand off to your account manager cleanly, then stay involved in the relationship for the long haul
- Maintain complete and accurate records in Applied Epic and follow agency workflows
- Bring market, carrier and client feedback back to the team
What you bring
- Demonstrated success in outside sales
- Property and casualty insurance experience, with working knowledge of commercial and/or personal lines products and underwriting
- Hands on experience in Applied Epic
- An active Property and Casualty license (Maryland, or the ability to obtain it promptly, plus DC and Virginia over time)
- Strong relationship building, presentation, organization and follow up skills
- The ability to run independently while being a genuinely reliable teammate
Nice to have
- An established referral network or a track record of building centers of influence
- Experience selling both personal and commercial lines
- Experience inside an independent agency (not captive)
Who thrives here
Our four core values are not wall art. They are how we hire and how we decide things.
- Continuously Improve.
- You want the coaching. You learn from the loss as much as the win.
- Treat Everyone Like Family.
- Prospects, clients, carriers, coworkers. Same respect, same patience.
- Have a Positive Attitude.
- You own the mistake and move the work forward.
- Appreciate the Value of Teamwork.
- You see the service team as your partner, not your support staff.
If you are a lone wolf who resists documentation and treats commission as the only scoreboard, this will not be a fit, and that is fine.
Compensation and benefits
Base salary plus uncapped new business and renewal commission on the business you write. Specific range provided on request.
Unlimited paid vacation. Not an accrual bank, not a set number of days you have to hoard. You take the time you need, and we mean it. Very few independent agencies in this market offer this.
A wellness plan built around early detection. Most wellness programs are a step-count app and a discount code. Ours is designed to catch serious disease early, when it is most treatable. And if you or a family member are ever working through a serious condition, the plan provides navigation support to help you find the right care and manage what comes next. We sell insurance for a living, so we know what it is worth to have someone in your corner at the worst moment.
Also included: medical, dental and vision coverage; life and disability insurance; a 401(k) with company contribution; paid holidays; and continuing education, licensing and professional designation support.
