Auto Insurance

Imagine if you were driving on a highway and reached down to look at your phone, change the radio station, or even grab a bite to eat.  You drift a few feet into the next lane for a split-second which causes another car to swerve and cause a major accident resulting in serious injury or death to passengers in the other vehicles.  You’re not injured and there is no damage to your car.  In most situations, those that are injured (or their families) will sue you for far more than the actual medical expenses.  If you are not adequately protected, they can even take your home away to settle the lawsuits.  Liability coverage in your auto insurance policy is perhaps the most important part of your policy and for sure the most overlooked.  Here are some other key considerations when reviewing your auto insurance needs…

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

In some states such as Maryland, your own policy covers medical expenses regardless of who is at fault in an accident.  Failure to include this coverage could cause you to pay out-of-pocket for your medical expenses relating to accident that was not your fault.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage

While State law may require all drivers to carry their own insurance, there are still people that choose not to obey the law and drive without insurance.  Further, you may be involved in an accident with an insured driver that leaves the scene of the accident before giving you their insurance information.  In both cases, your insurance policy will protect you if you have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.  Failure to include this type of coverage could cause you to pay out-of-pocket for an accident that was not your fault.

Replacement Parts

Have you ever had a car that was in an accident and was “never quite the same again.”  This is because your insurance company used parts to replace your car that weren’t made for your car.  Unfortunately, many auto insurance carriers have made this standard practice.   The strongest carriers will call the manufacturer of your vehicle and order new parts directly from them.  This is the only true way to restore your car to the condition that it was in prior to an accident.

Accident & Ticket Forgiveness

Regardless of whether you are a “safe” driver or not, we all make mistakes.  Some insurance companies will double your rates or even stop renewing your policy due to an accident or ticket on your record.  For this reason, we recommend a policy that offers accident and ticket forgiveness.  This will protect you from rate increases due to a rare accident or ticket.  This is especially important when you have new drivers on your policy.

Discounts

Every carrier offers discounts.  The biggest discounts are generally for people that combine their auto and home with the same carrier.  You should always find out what that discount would be.  In many cases the combined savings for a “multi-policy discount” can completely offset the premium for one of your policies.
